- 6 Weeks The TARGET Program is a highly competitive six-week summer internship opportunity for Illinois high school sophomores and juniors who have a strong interest and demonstrated an aptitude for physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering.

The program’s design combines both work and experiential learning.

TARGET encourages high school students to undertake college study and pursue careers in STEM disciplines.

Increasing the number of minorities (Black, Hispanic/Latino, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Alaska Native/American Indian) and women in science, engineering, and computer science is a program priority.

- June and August The Digital Learning Internship selects 15 high school students from Chicagoland to be scientists for the summer.

We introduce them to researchers and museum experts from across the Field Museum and they choose one to work with on a 5-week research project.

Teen interns will learn a wide variety of technology and digital media skills to support their research and will participate in professional development and enrichment sessions that focus on a range of topics such as resume building, interview skills, and building portfolios of work to ensure that they can capitalize on the skills that they develop over the summer.

This paid internship usually runs for 6 weeks between June and August.

Teens who are selected for the program must be available to work in-person at the Museum for 4 or 5 days a week.

- Chicago EYES on Cancer Application Deadline: January 23, 2024 Duration: 2 years (two 8-week summer research intensives plus monthly activities during the academic year) Chicago EYES (Educators and Youth Enjoy Science) on Cancer is a cancer research training program for high school and college students interested in careers in biomedicine.

For two consecutive summers, participants receive a stipend and work full time in the laboratories of established cancer researchers at the university.

Besides being trained in research, participants will partake in a cancer-based summer lecture series, year-round career development and skill-building workshops, and meetings with a network of faculty and peer mentors dedicated to participants’ success.

The program ends with a final research symposium.

Participants work full time in the laboratories of established cancer researchers, gaining hands-on experience in areas at the forefront of the field: cancer immunology, bioengineering, experimental cancer therapeutics, cancer disparities and more.

0. UChicago Data Science Institute Summer Lab Program Application Deadline: February 12, 2024 Duration: 10 weeks The Data Science Institute Summer Lab program is an immersive 8-week paid summer research program at the University of Chicago.

In the program, undergraduate students (and Chicago-area high school students) are paired with a data science mentor in various domains, including: computer science, data science, social science, climate and energy policy, public policy, materials science, and biomedical research.

Through this pairing the research assistant will engage with and hone their skills in research methodologies, practices, and teamwork.
